War Memorial Gardens

The Civic Society were involved in a number of projects commemorating the outbreak of the

Great War and felt that a practical permanent scheme could be the renewal of the names

on the war memorial in Hengate. With the help of the East Riding of Yorkshire Council, the

Royal British legion and other volunteers things began to happen but not until some

unforeseen difficulties occurred particularly in regard to the problems of the foundations

which needed to be underpinned at considerable cost. The opportunity was also taken to

add the names of those who had been omitted.
